Learning Goals

  • Learn and understand Newton’s laws

Newton’s Laws of Motion

  1. Law of inertia
  2. F=ma
  3. Action = Reaction

1st Law of Motion

  • An object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an external force
  • Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist changes in its velocity

Friction

  • A force that acts on an object in motion
  • There are 4 types of Friction:
  1. Sliding friction - Also dynamic friction
  2. Rolling friction - On a ball
  3. Fluid Friction - Air or Water
  4. Static friction - Initial friction

2nd Law of Motion

  • The net force of an object is equal to the product of tis mass and acceleration, or F=ma
  • M = mass(kg)
  • A = Acceleration (m/s/s)
  • F = Force (N)

Example

\[ F=ma \ F=3*4 \ F=12N \]

3rd Law of Motion

  • For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
  • The normal force is the equal and opposite reaction force of the force due to gravity
  • According to Newton, whenever objects A and B interact with each other they exert force upon each other
