Types of Reactions
Jamie Z 2024-06-11Learning Goals
- Identify types of chemical reactions as single displacement, double displacement, synthesis and decomposition
Combustion
- Exothermic reaction releasing a lot of energy by a substance combusting
- A lot of heat is produced when a substance combusts
- Oxygen is required
\[ Fuel\ + oxygen=carbon\ dioxide \ + water \]

Decomposition
-
Compound breaks into smaller parts such as compounds or elements
(A)(B) ———> (A) + (B)
-
You can have multiple products but one reactant
Synthesis
-
Multiple reactants combine to form a single product
(A) + (B) ———> (A)(B)
Single Displacement
- Form of substitute reaction. If a compound has two parts, a single displacement reaction is one of those parts is swapped for a new part

Double Displacement
- Two compound (ionic compound) reacts with another two part compound. Both compounds break apart, then rearrange in a different order
